In late May 2006, more than 50 educators and publishers, representing a wide range of specialties, gathered at the National Academy of Sciences, in Washington, D.C., to participate in a 3-day National Science Foundation-funded workshop titled "Reconsidering the Textbook."

Through small- and large-group discussions, the attendees "examined the current state of the textbook and its relationship to the growing number of electronic tools that also serve as learning resources for today's students" and sought to envision the textbook of the future.

At the conclusion of the workshop there was general consensus that:

[T]he textbook of the future will be more than a static printed volume. ... It will function as a guide, interweaving and coordinating a variety of different learning resources including animations, simulations, and interactive exercises. ... [It will] be easily searchable, and thus would be learner accessible with a flexible electronic interface.

The group envisioned the "Future Textbook" - whether printed or electronic - as "the organizing hub of an integrated learning environment [that would] become increasingly adaptable, customizable, and responsive." They imagined it as a "Web-linked travel guide" that was modular by design, thus allowing an instructor to configure content to suit the goals of a particular course as well as the specific needs of individual students. In this view, access to networked resources would strongly promote higher-level thinking. The group also agreed that the Future Textbook would be integrated with course management systems.

Abilene Christian University (ACU) is a Christian university offering more than 65 baccalaureate majors in more than 125 areas of study, as well as 25 master's degree programs and a doctoral program. Located on a 250-acre campus in the city of Abilene in west-central Texas, ACU has an annual enrollment of approximately 4,700 students.

According to "America's Best Colleges" , a special report published in August 2010 by Forbes, Abilene Christian University is "among the best in the country," with a ranking of No. 484 of the more than 6,600 accredited postsecondary institutions eligible for consideration in the magazine's assessment. ACU is also recognized in the rankings of U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Colleges," in The Princeton Review's "Best in the West," as a "College of Distinction" by Student Horizons, and in 'America's 100 Best College Buys" and "America's Best Christian Colleges."

ACU is a founding member of the Consortium for Innovation & Research in Converged Learning (CIRCL), a free community-supported network of researchers, professors, teachers, and other education professionals engaged in mobile and converged learning practice and research. In 2009, ACU was designated a Center of Excellence for its mobile-learning program by the New Media Consortium at its 2009 summer conference.

BlackBerry smartphones are designed and manufactured by Research In Motion (RIM), founded in 1984 and headquarteredin Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. RIM launched the first BlackBerry in 1999; current models include the Bold, Curve, and Storm series, as well as the Torch and Tour.

According to a mid-September 2010 comScore press release,"RIM remained the leading mobile smartphone platform in the U.S. with 39.3 percent share of U.S. smartphone subscribers," despite losing a market share of nearly 2% to smartphones using the Android operating system. Based on its review, comScore estimates that 53.4 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones during the 3 months ending July 2010, an increase of more than 10% from the corresponding April 2010 period.

For the second quarter of 2010, RIM reported that its BlackBerry smartphone shipments grew to 12.1 million units, an increase of 45% over the same quarter in 2009. In addition, its subscriber account base grew to 50 million, an increase of nearly 56% over the 2009 period. As of June 30, 2010, RIM had shipped approximately 115 million units.

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) estimated that more than 5 billion mobile subscriptions would exist worldwide by the end of 2010, which more than tripled home Internet access.1 ITU also predicts Web access from mobile devices will exceed access from desktop computers within the next five years.

These statistics are hardly surprising; with advancements in technology and the rise in smartphone use, people are taking advantage of being connected to data wherever they are. Mobile phones aren’t just phones anymore: they can access e-mail, search the Web, video chat, and play games. Even mobile devices like iPad and iPod touch can bring social media, productivity tools, and entertainment literally into the palm of your hand.

Therefore, libraries should be exploring mobile devices as a way to connect with patrons. Creating a library application (“app”) or mobile Web site that allows patrons to access library hours, view their library account or even search databases is easier than most people think. The resources below should help libraries begin to plan and implement their own unique mobile presence.

Resources were chosen based on relevancy, accuracy, and content. Due to current economic considerations, free mobile applications were chosen over similar paid applications.

The visibility and utility of mobile hardware, software, and connectivity continue their exponential increase. Libraries are finding it difficult to ignore the implications a perpetually connected user base has to information resources traditionally confined to desktop or laptop computers. Library users stand to benefit enormously if libraries can effectively offer their information resources in the now-ubiquitous mobile medium.

Many questions remain to be answered:

• How informed are libraries and their resource providers about what users want to do with mobile devices?

• Are information providers’ recent mobile interface offerings useful to libraries and mobile users?

• How can libraries take advantage of existing popular mobile apps?

• Can individual libraries be effective in addressing mobile technologies and user demands on their own, or will development dollars be best spent on collaborative efforts or vendor-supplied services? Are such efforts and services available?

• In focusing more attention on mobile users, are libraries neglecting other user populations who do not have access to mobile devices?

• Do mobile device and service providers have any incentive to work with libraries and serve neglected populations?

These and other issues remain in flux as the library and larger information communities attempt to grasp the impact of mobile computing. Join NISO for a one-day forum at which invited speakers will explore many of the pressing questions about libraries’ interaction with and promotion of mobile technologies.

Given the tremendous adoption of mobile devices and applications in the business and consumer markets, the rising interest in and support for mobile apps on the part of colleges and universities should come as no surprise. And while mobile technology adoption is in its infancy in higher education, we've already seen a substantial move toward the deployment of mobile applications on campus in the past two years.

According to the fall 2010 Campus Computing Survey, more than 70 percent of the surveyed CIOs and senior IT leaders "agree or strongly agree" that "mobile [LMS] apps are an important part of our campus plan to enhance instructional resources and campus services." (Currently, the majority of mobile apps in higher ed are tied to learning management systems, although their features often extend beyond the LMS.)

Still, the move to mobile apps on campus remains in the early stages: Just 13 percent of the more than 525 campuses that participated in the Campus Computing Survey reported that they had activated mobile LMS apps as of fall 2010. However, another 10 percent say they will go live with mobile LMS apps this academic year, while nearly a quarter have a mobile app strategy under review. From these data we can see both great interest in mobile applications, and a strong indication of a growing movement in the activation of mobile apps.

Abstract:

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to assess how Canadian academic libraries have responded to the rapidly evolving mobile environment and to identify gaps in the services provided, while suggesting areas for future development.

Design/methodology/approach – The paper conducted an examination of the mobile content and services provided by the libraries of the member institutions of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC). Based on this examination, the paper describes the current state of mobile librarianship in Canadian academic libraries. A review of the literature places the investigation in its broader context.

Findings – Only 14 percent of AUCC libraries currently advertise some type of mobile web presence, with mobile web sites being prevalent over downloadable apps. Examples of content and services are highlighted to illustrate current trends and to provide insight into future directions for developing mobile services.

Practical implications – This study raises awareness of the importance of mobile technology for academic libraries and the need to address the lack of mobile content and services provided by most Canadian post-secondary institutions. The paper also identifies best practices exhibited by the surveyed libraries.

Originality/value – This is the first exploration of this type into how academic libraries in Canada have responded to the mobile environment. The value of this research is in helping libraries identify and address shortcomings in the mobile content and services they provide, and in highlighting efforts by libraries to address their users' needs in this area.

What evidence would provide a good indication that the day had come for your library to focus concerted efforts on mobile services? If nearly all Americans owned cell phones? Maybe if a large percentage of those phone owners demonstrably used their device to access the internet? Perhaps if smartphone sales began to approach sales of PCs? If major information service providers were shifting their focus from the desktop to mobile devices? If the trend turned away from mobile devices mimicking the functions of desktop computers, and instead desktops began to emulate mobiles? Maybe if there was evidence that traditional desktop connectivity wasn’t reaching people who could be reached on their mobile devices?

If so, then that day is today.

The evidence is compelling. The vast majority of Americans now own cell phones. Nearly half use them to access the internet. In Q4 of 2010, manufacturers shipped more smartphones than they did traditional PCs. Underrepresented groups are accessing the mobile internet in impressive numbers. Google is developing for mobile first and the desktop second. Apple is in the midst of making its desktop computers behave more like its mobile devices. If your library, like mine (and every library I can think of), has been transformed by desktop computing and internet access, now is the time to take action and be proactive in providing robust services to mobile users.

QR (quick response) Codes, a type of barcode, are beginning to make inroads in the United States. They are still largely unknown, but early adopters in higher education and recent urban promotional campaigns are changing that. As with any new technology, it is important to understand what they can do and when they can help our users.

A QR code is a matrix barcode readable by smartphones and mobile phones with cameras. They are sometimes referred to as 2d codes, 2d barcodes, or mobile codes. [snip]

The QR code typically appears as a small white square with black geometric shapes, though colored and even branded QR codes are now being used. QR codes can hold much more information than a regular barcode. The information encoded in a QR code can be a URL, a phone number, an SMS message, a V-card, or any text. They are referred to as QR because they allow the contents to be decoded at high speed. QR codes were developed in 1994 by Denso-Wave, a Toyota subsidiary.

There are several reasons to believe this may be the time to prepare for mainstream use of QR codes in the United States, and for academic institutions and libraries to start implementing this technology. [snip]

Essentially, QR codes are a convenient way to add the virtual to the physical—to provide useful content, often at the time of need. [snip]

QR codes are a low-threshold technology. Low-cost, easy to implement, and easy to use, ... .

How Are Libraries Using QR Codes?

Librarians and staff in large research universities, small liberal arts institutions, public libraries, and museums are experimenting and discovering useful ways to implement QR codes in both their physical and online libraries. [snip]

• Library exhibits that include a QR code link to songs, videos, Web sites, surveys, contests, etc. or other information that augments the exhibits

• Codes in the library stacks/end caps or magazine/journal areas that point to online electronic holdings of print materials or related subject guides

• Linking to library audio tours for orientations

• Code added to print handouts for additional information on mobile friendly sites

• QR code with text that loads the library’s text message reference service and other contact information into the patron’s phone

• Art shows or permanent art in libraries with a QR code linking to the artists’ Web sites

• In catalog records to offer patrons basic info about an item, including the location and call number. Users can scan the code and head to the stacks rather than writing or printing

• Taped to video/ DVD cases, linking to mobile-friendly video trailers

• Code placed on staff directory pages and research guides that go to mobile friendly sites for later reference

• Code placed on audio book cases for author interviews or books for reviews

• Code placed on study room doors connecting to room reservation forms

• Library video tutorials—individual videos or create a QR code to a YouTube playlists of videos, which create a great mobile home screen app that can be saved for easy access, as needed

An Innovative Library Vendor

Alexander Street Press (ASP) has devised an innovative use for QR codes in their subscription-based Music Online databases. In a July 2010 press release, ASP President Stephen Rhind-Tutt announced that “Patrons of subscribing libraries can now listen to hundreds of thousands of classical, jazz, world music, and other recordings from smart phones and other mobile devices."

Universities that roll out campuswide mobile initiatives say they are sending a message that they are unafraid to experiment with technology.

As soon as the Illinois Institute of Technology announced last May that it would be giving all 400 incoming freshmen Apple iPads, a lively debate broke out online at TUAW.com (The Unofficial Apple Weblog) between people who saw it as a marketing gimmick to attract students and others who believed it was an honest attempt to implement a new and useful educational technology.

Mike Gosz, IIT’s vice provost for undergraduate affairs, has heard sarcastic comments about the project, and he readily admits that the desire to be seen as an innovative campus played a role in the decision. “We are the Illinois Institute of Technology,” he points out. “We need to be at the forefront of technological development. That message needs to be made clear to prospective students, and that was part of the decision.”

[Bill] Rankin [of Abilene Christian University (TX)] is in a position to know about these things. As director of mobile learning at ACU, he oversees the campus’s much-touted initiative that gave iPhones and iPod Touches to incoming freshmen and faculty members. (The program won a 2008 Campus Technology Innovators award) [snip]

“The reason students are excited about this iPhone program is not because it’s like getting a free toaster,” Rankin told CT last year. “They like it that we are actually thinking about the future of education. We’re saying to them, ‘Come study with us and help define the future of education.’ They like being active participants in that discovery.”

Relevant to the Future

With Title III grants from the Department of Education, Seton Hill University (PA) has been working on infusing the latest technology into the classroom for several years, including creating labs for faculty to explore emerging technologies and experiment with Second Life, as well as investing in ubiquitous WiFi. In the same vein, the Griffin Technology Advantage program, Seton Hill’s campuswide iPad initiative launched this fall, provides incoming students with an iPad and a MacBook Pro that students will take with them upon graduation.

... Seton Hill President JoAnne Boyle is emphatic that marketing and recruitment were not strong motivators behind the program. “Our number one motivation was the potential to address individual students’ ability to acquire knowledge and think,” she says.

In [the case of Duke University] ... , [Yvonne] Belanger [head of assessment and planning for Perkins Library and the Center for Instructional Technology] notes that the school “didn’t have any specific academic goals” for its [well-known] iPod initiative, but rather “wanted to see what interesting uses of the technology would develop.” That effort has, in fact, evolved into the Duke Digital Initiative, a multiyear program that allows faculty to experiment with new and emerging technologies.

This past fall, when George Fox University (OR) offered students a choice between receiving a MacBook or an iPad, the program was motivated by twin desires: to be future-oriented and to bolster the school’s ongoing major technology initiative.

Not Without Challenges

Even schools that launched their programs after the iPad’s release still felt overwhelmed entering into such new territory. IIT’s Gosz remembers the excitement on his campus last May when administrators announced the iPad program. “It was like jumping out of an airplane and then figuring out how your parachute works,” he says.

Improving the Academic Experience

Technological glitches aside, the administrators who ventured into these campuswide mobile initiatives have both high and realistic hopes for their impact on both students’ and faculty’s academic experiences.

The IIT project, for example, evolved from an earlier plan to improve customer service for students. Surveys had indicated students wanted better tools to navigate their way around the campus and its administrative systems. IIT was planning to create a campus-specific app and give iPods to all incoming freshmen and transfer students. But after seeing a demo of the iPad, and its price point relative to the iPod Touch, campus executives switched gears and gave all 450 first-year students iPads instead. The IIT app provides students with access to news, events, maps, and course listings. It will also enable the university to push emergency alerts directly to iPod, iPhone, and iPad devices.

Gosz, who is leading the implementation, says the iPads are already changing things at IIT. In the summer, 20 faculty members who work with freshmen received iPads and attended workshops put on by Apple. Faculty members have set up a social networking group for discussions on how to use iPads in class. In one discussion, a civil engineering professor described how students could use the iPad as a GPS device to map the campus. A graphic design professor is exploring 3D modeling capabilities. The school is adopting Blackboard Mobile Learn and Wolfram’s Mathematica for the iPad.

At George Fox , the iPad thus far has been embraced more by liberal arts faculty than those teaching science and engineering courses, which might require Windows capabilities, Smith reports. The devices are already in use by a juniors abroad program in Paris. Two professors described to Smith sitting on the banks of the Seine waiting to take students to the Louvre. One was giving a talk about what they were going to see. The other was pulling up art images on the iPad and passing it around for the students to view. “The device is great in that type of social setting,” he says.

Smith acknowledges that the iPad’s potential as an e-reader was an early selling point but because textbook publishers’ business plans are still developing, “this is essentially a pilot project.” He adds, “It is a tremendous opportunity to study how [the iPads] might impact teaching and learning.”

Seton Hill’s Boyle is equally sanguine about the school’s mobile initiative. “We think 20 percent of courses will be affected by iPads this year,” she says. She envisions students downloading books to their iPads and using Evernote, a note-taking program that syncs notes, photos, and voice memos with their computers. “But we are just beginning. We will have more stories to tell later.”

But she insists she is not starry-eyed about the iPad. “We have said to Apple we will drop you in a minute if something better comes along,” Boyle says. “We are not wed to the iPad forever. We are wed to the idea of using the best technology we can find.”

Duke’s Belanger would approve such sentiment and offers a bit of cautionary guidance. “We don’t always know which direction to go to keep pushing the envelope,” she says. “But these schools that are taking the leap now with iPads need to know that faculty and students will expect them to keep it up and stay on the cutting edge.”

The number of Filipinos with Internet access is expected to increase nearly 15-fold, from 2 million subscribers in 2000 to an estimated 29.7 million by the end of this year (http://bit.ly/k36fo). The Philippines has also seen a substantial increase in the use of mobile services for a similar period. By early 2009, there were 73 million users, significantly more than the 6 million in 2000. In 2008, the mobile market increased more than 25% and more than 20% in 2007. As of March 2009, 80% of its population were subscribers (http://bit.ly/cWVZ8q).

SCOPE

Smart phones and tablet computers such as iPhone and iPad have not only increased the pace of digital publishing but also fueled sharing digital information instantly in textual, audio and video formats through social networks. It is projected that mobile data traffic will grow 40 times over the next five years and that more people will, by 2013, access the Web from their mobile devices than from their desktop computers. Mobile technologies could “push digital publishing past tipping point by 2014,” as people are using digital magazines and journals much more often than their print equivalents.

“Digital Publishing and Mobile Technologies” will be the main theme of the 15th International Conference on Electronic Publishing (ELPUB), to be held in Istanbul, Turkey, from June 22-24, 2011. ELPUB2011 will bring together both researchers and practitioners to discuss digital publishing and mobile applications along with their implications for scholarly communication, information services, e-learning, e-businesses and digital cultural heritage sector. Digital publishing software and applications for mobile devices will be highlighted along with the integration of their functional capabilities such as location awareness with digital resources. Methods by which digital content can be repurposed for mobile devices and mobile users will also be discussed, as they have different browsing, reading and viewing habits.

Cell phone use in the U.S. has increased dramatically over the past decade. Fully eight in ten adults today (82%) are cell phone users, and about one-quarter of adults (23%) now live in a household that has a cell phone but no landline phone.

Along with the widespread embrace of mobile technology has come the development of an “apps culture.” As the mobile phone has morphed from a voice device to a multi-channel device to an internet-accessing mini-computer, a large market of mobile software applications, or “apps,” has arisen.

Among the most popular are apps that provide some form of entertainment (games, music, food, travel and sports) as well as those that help people find information they need and accomplish tasks (maps and navigation, weather, news, banking). [snip]

The most recent Pew Internet Project survey asked a national sample of 1,917 cell phone-using adults if they use apps and how they use them. Broadly, the results indicate that while apps are popular among a segment of the adult cell phone using population, a notable number of cell owners are not yet part of the emerging apps culture.

35% of adults have cell phones with apps, but only two-thirds of those who have apps actually use them

Yet having apps and using apps are not synonymous. Of those who have apps on their phones, only about two-thirds of this group (68%) actually use that software. [snip]

Apps users are younger, more educated, and more affluent than other cell phone users

When compared with other cell phone using adults, and the entire U.S. adult population, the apps user population skews male, and is much younger, more affluent, and more educated than other adults. Overall, the apps-using population also skews slightly Hispanic when compared with other adult cell phone users.

App use still ranks relatively low when compared with other uses of cell phones

[snip] Taking pictures and texting are far and away the most popular non-voice cell phone data applications, with more than seven in ten adult cell phone users embracing these features of their phones.

29% of adult cell phone users have downloaded an app to their phone

As with the apps-using population as a whole, downloaders are younger, more educated, and disproportionately male when compared with the total U.S. adult population. [snip]

Those who download apps do so fairly frequently. Among apps downloaders, roughly half (53%) say their most recent download was in the past 30 days, including one third (33%) who say their last download was within the past week. [snip]

One in eight adult cell phone users (13%) has paid to download an app

Among the 29% of adult cell phone users who download apps, just under half (47%) have paid for an app, with the remainder saying they only download apps that are free. [snip]

Nielsen data indicate that games are the most popular apps, followed by news/weather, maps/navigation, social networking, and music.

In the Nielsen survey, most recent apps downloaders said they used their apps daily but for short periods of time, and used them in a variety of situations.

Some 57% of the recent apps downloaders in the Nielsen study said they use their apps daily. While one quarter of these recent apps downloaders (24%) said they use their apps for more than 30 minutes a day, the vast majority said they spend less time using their apps each day.

The Nielsen survey indicates that different people may use apps in different ways

There were several notable differences among the Nielsen recent-downloader sample in terms of which apps they favored and how frequently they used them. For instance:

Women in the sample were more likely than men to have used a social networking app in the past 30 days (53% v. 42%), and women who used the Facebook app were also more likely to use that app everyday (64% v. 55%)

Women in the sample were more likely than men to have a used a game app in the past 30 days (63% v. 58%), while men were more likely to have used a productivity app (29% v. 21%) or a banking/finance app (31% v. 25%)

Among the Nielsen sample of recent downloaders, whites (53%) and Hispanics (47%) were more likely than African-Americans (36%) to have used a map/navigation/search app in the month prior to the survey

In the Nielsen sample, 75% of 18-24 year-old Twitter app users reported using that app every day, compared with 52% of the 25-34 year-olds and 48% of the Twitter users age 35 and older

In contrast, among Nielsen’s Facebook app users, 25-34 year-olds were more likely than both younger and older Facebook app users to report using their Facebook app daily.

The African-Americans and Hispanics in the Nielsen sample were significantly more likely than whites to be daily users of their Youtube apps (33% of African-Americans v. 24% of Hispanics v. 12% of whites) and their Pandora music apps (33% of African-Americans v. 27% of Hispanics v. 14% of whites)

Report: Seven Significant Trends in Mobile Usage

With mobile penetration in the US estimated by eMarketer at nearly 80% this year, and the increasing sophistication of handsets, there is a mature mobile market with a critical mass of users increasingly receptive to marketing and content. As the space becomes more important for marketers’ efforts, they must keep pace with the changing scene.

One of the biggest keys to these new marketing opportunities is the rise of smartphones. The percentage of US consumers thinking about buying a smartphone has doubled since the beginning of 2008, according to ChangeWave Research, and Nielsen expects smartphones to be in the hands of half of US mobile users by the end of Q3 2011.

As handsets change, so do mobile consumption and usage patterns. Voice is becoming less relevant, and carriers and their marketing and content partners have transitioned to a focus on data.

Social networks are fast becoming the primary way mobile users exchange information. According to comScore, use of social networking applications increased by 240% between April 2009 and April 2010.

As recently as two years ago, mobile banking in the developing world was an object of skepticism among financial insiders. While proponents argued that cell phones could revolutionize personal finance in poorer countries, regulators warned of money laundering and most bankers worried that low customer balances wouldn't be worth the transaction costs. Many thought of "m-banking" as a niche product that, at most, could maintain the loyalty of existing traditional bank customers. Few imagined it might bring savings, credit, and liquidity to those who don't belong to a bank in the first place.

Now, however, the doubters have been proved entirely wrong. The spontaneous and unplanned explosion of m-banking in the developing world has gone well beyond expectations. And the effects for development could be monumental.

Three years ago, Safaricom, the Kenyan subsidiary of Vodafone, launched "M-Pesa," a mobile money-transfer service that essentially allowed vendors of mobile airtime cards — there are apparently 100,000 such vendors in the country — to institutionalize what they had been doing informally. M-Pesa wasn't the first service of this kind, but it has become the most successful by far. Today, M-Pesa has roughly 10 million customers in Kenya, 40 percent of the adult population. [snip]

Other m-banking products that have met with surprising success are Celpay in Zambia and Gcash and Smart Money in the Philippines.

By 2012, mobile banking operators could see nearly $8 billion in revenue just by expanding their services to the currently unbanked, according to an estimate by the Consultative Group to Assist the Poor (CGAP). In the developed world, m-banking is gaining traction in Australia, Britain, Korea, and Singapore, as well as in the United States.

One scholar who has studied M-Pesa, Olga Morawczynski of the University of Edinburgh, estimates that rural households that are mobile money subscribers see their incomes increase 5 to 30 percent. And though an increase in income is often only a short-term poverty solution, savings and asset-building, as encouraged by programs like M-Kesho, move people toward sustainable economic independence in the long term.[snip]

No matter what happens, however, in the context of global development the financial success of m-banking is already one of the greatest success stories of recent years. As U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in January, these technologies are "allowing billions of people to leapfrog into the 21st century after missing out on 20th-century breakthroughs." Rutgers ... Put[s] iPad To The Test In New Digital Marketing Program

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Each student enrolling in a new Mini-MBA: Digital Marketing Executive Certificate Program being launched at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, this summer will receive an iPad, but it’s not intended to be a shiny, new toy offered as a gift just for participating. Rather, the iPads will be an integral part of the 12-session program, customized with Apple’s help to provide a new dimension to executive education in a field being fueled by technology.

Rather than offering the program online, the Rutgers Center for Management Development (CMD) is seeking to merge the benefits of in-person classroom learning with the power and flexibility of digital technology. Rutgers faculty are working with Apple to customize the iPad for use in the course and with programmers to develop apps specific for each of the 12 three-hour modules.

The 36-hour course will be taught by both Rutgers faculty and leading practitioners from around the world. Module topics include digital marketing strategy, social media marketing, real time research and response, mobile marketing, online PR; digital brand management, understanding the new digital consumer, measurement and “ROI” (return on investment) of digital marketing, digital innovation models and digital transformation.

The global reach of mobile has spread to libraries. The impact of mobile technology on information seeking behavior, interpersonal communication, and patrons’ expectations for services is starting to affect the way libraries are conceived of and imprinting itself upon the design and delivery of library operations. The expanding focus on mobile technology is literally changing the way libraries around the world do business.

Our Mobile Futures

The future of libraries is change. Mobile technology is impacting many aspects of our cultures, most especially in regards to information, reading, and scholarly communication. Libraries are changing as well to keep pace with these pressures. We are putting our time-tested skills to use by reimagining library services and collections for the mobile age on a global scale. The infl uences upon demand for mobile access and communication vary across geography, but the trend itself ties us together as a world-wide profession that is more closely connected thanks to and because of mobile technology. We are all now serving end users with widely global connections amongst themselves and with the information they are engaging.

Bright futures are possible for libraries in a world of mobile technology. But they are not guaranteed. It is up to us librarians to ensure that we are critical in embracing the changes needed for adapting to these evolutions in expectations. This may require that we carefully decide, as individual libraries and as a profession, if we want to embrace change and stay relevant as the information sphere enters the world of mobile or if we want to maintain our previous roles and sustain our former success in a niche more heavily reflective of the past.

According to statistical data compiled by the International Telecommunications Union (ITC), a United Nations agency concerned with information and communication technology issues, by the end of 2009, there were more than 4.6 billion mobile cellular subscriptions worldwide, representing an ownership rate of 67% per 1,000 inhabitants [snip]. The ITC data also indicated that cell phone ownership is nearly universal in the developed world (97%) and that nearly one-half of the developing world (45%) owned cell phones by the middle of 2007 [snip]

Informa Telecoms & Media's Global Mobile Forecasts (2009) predicts that there will be more than 5.3 billion mobile phone subscribers by the end of 2012. This report noted that "it took over 20 years to reach 3 billion subscriptions ... but another 1.9 billion net additions are forecast in just six years, with the global total nudging past the 5 billion milestone in 2011." Informa Telecoms & Media, a "leading provider of business intelligence and strategic services to the global telecoms and media markets," forecasted that "78 percent of global net additions between 2007 and 2013" will come from markets in Asia Pacific, Africa, and Latin America. Specifically, it noted that 47% of the 1.9 billion would come from India, China, Indonesia, Brazil, and Russia. Facilitating communication for deaf individuals with mobile technologies

Communication between deaf individuals and hearing individuals can be very difficult. For people who are born deaf, English is often a second language with the first language being American Sign Language (ASL). Very few hearing people in the United States sign or are aware of Deafness, Deaf culture, or how to appropriately communicate with people with hearing loss.

In this thesis, I concentrate on the role that mobile technologies can play in ameliorating some of these issues. In formative work with Deaf teenagers in the metro-Atlanta area, I investigate the role that communication technologies play in the lives of many Deaf individuals and examine how these devices have effected their communication patterns and social circles. Specifically, the teens identified problems communicating with hearing individuals such as close friends and family in face-to- face situations.

Having identified sign language use at home as one of the earliest interventions for Deaf children, I investigated the use of mobile phones for learning survival-level ASL. I created a prototype software application which presented short ASL lessons via either a mobile phone or desktop web-browser. The software presented the lessons via one of two different scheduling methods designed to take advantage of the spacing effect during learning. I designed and conducted a study of forty individuals with no prior ASL knowledge which compared the effects of both scheduling algorithm and platform. My results show that individuals who used a mobile phone platform and received a group of lessons at one time performed better on post-test receptive and generative ASL metrics than did participants in the three other conditions.

Determinants of mobile learning acceptance: An empirical investigation in higher education

Abstract (Summary)

Scope and method of study.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the determinants of mobile learning acceptance in higher education. Mobile learning is a rapidly growing method of learning that utilizes mobile devices to deliver content. Acceptance of mobile learning theory was derived from technology acceptance theories. The study developed a new model Mobile Learning Acceptance Model (MLAM) that extended the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The model explains the important factors that influence acceptance of mobile learning among university students. The population of the survey was limited to freshman students; this population was chosen because the literature indicated a presence of large technology literacy gap (techno-literacy gap) between universities and the new generation of students. Response rate was high at approximately 95%.

The survey was administered to different freshman leadership classes as well as a freshman orientation camp. The survey instrument was developed based on the literature and past research. The constructs developed and investigated are: student readiness (self efficacy and commitment), ease of access (convenience), quality of service (content quality, reliability and response, personalization, and privacy and security), extrinsic influence (superior influence and peer influence), university commitment (university support), and the TAM constructs of usefulness, ease of use, attitude, and behavioral intention.

Findings and conclusions.

The research study concluded that all hypothesized relations in the MLAM model were supported and influence student's acceptance of mobile learning indirectly through usefulness and ease of use. Ease of access was excluded for its mediation effects on ease of use. Quality of service influenced ease of use directly and usefulness indirectly. Usefulness was the stronger predictor of acceptance through its direct and indirect influence on behavioral intention to use (primary predictor of acceptance and use). Extrinsic influence and student readiness were found to be the most influential factors in the model. Tests conducted along the group levels revealed that prior experience has significant affect on acceptance of mobile learning by students. Students who used their device for learning in the past had stronger perceptions of usefulness of mobile learning additionally their behavioral intention to use was stronger.

Internet connectivity is increasingly moving off of the desktop and into the mobile and wireless environment, particularly for teens and young adults. These populations no longer access the internet solely from a computer or even a laptop; they now go online via more mobile technologies such as cell phones and portable gaming devices. Rates of cell phone ownership in particular have risen dramatically for both teens and adults over the past five years, driving the mobile internet revolution. .

Understanding an individual's technological environment is now a vital clue in understanding how that person uses the internet, connects with others and accesses information. This presentation will draw on nationally representative data on the behaviors and attitudes of teen, young adult, and older adult internet users from the United States and other countries (where available) to outline the technological environment in which these groups currently reside and explore the subsequent impacts on the ways they access and share information..

The presentation will also explore how understanding the new information ecology, and the new information consumer, can help educators and librarians in particular rethink and reimagine their roles in information flow.

Educational organisations are in a quandary about the relevance of mobile technologies for supporting teaching and learning processes. Few organisations have a holistic strategy for accommodating the potential of mobile technologies effectively. This session looks at the range of possibilities that mobile technologies provide for education and examines the strategies which can be used to harness that potential effectively.

The devices themselves are incredibly powerful with some current devices having more computing power and faster connectivity than some colleges had less than a decade ago. Within organisations, localized approaches to harnessing the potential of mobile technologies are less effective than a strategic organisation wide approach.

Many organisations concentrate on trying to raise staff skills and awareness for using e-learning. However, we will examine the notion that actually, an important part of any implementation should also involve educating the students as to why and how they might choose to use their devices differently. For example, not all students know the 'educational' value of some web2 technologies, or the value of enabling bluetooth on their mobile phones for receiving calendar files which can be used to embed course and assessment deadlines directly into their mobile phone calendars. Students may not be aware that their phone could be used as an e-book reader or a device to upload podcasts or read QR codes. To gain the most from the potential of the technology for libraries and education, implementation strategies need to be socio-technological in their scope, encompassing both staff, students and technological considerations. .

The session will explain how your library and organisation could use podcasting and vodcasting, animated gif guides, mobile phone e-book solutions, dedicated e-book readers, augmented reality applications, GPS applications, social networking developments and bluetooth solutions amongst many others, to enhance the present learning environment for your students. It will highlight a variety of strategies for allowing the effective implementation of mobile technology solutions and examine the concerns people have about their use. .

14:00 hrs Opportunities for Mobile Enhanced Library Services and Collections

The 2010 Horizon Report from the New Media Consortium identified Mobile Computing as one of two emerging technologies likely to have a significant impact on teaching, learning, or creative expression in higher education in the coming year. How can libraries approach the opportunity created by pervasive mobile computing?.

The presentation introduces one model for planning mobile initiatives within an academic library context, informed by the experience of mobile library initiatives deployed at North Carolina State University. The model advocates for thinking about mobile as a use context rather than a content delivery channel, and leveraging existing digital assets where possible. The model distinguishes between: .

•library services optimized for a mobile use context, and

•digital library collections optimized for a mobile use context.

The NCSU Libraries Mobile project is used as a case study for mobile optimized library services. NCSU Libraries Mobile provides a suite of library services designed to make library users more productive. The WolfWalk project is used as a case study for mobile optimized digital collections. WolfWalk is a historical guide to the NCSU campus that exposes archival content through a location-aware mobile interface. Location-aware interfaces to digital library content hold the promise of providing in situ learning opportunities by exposing content in the context of the users current location.

The presentation outlines several considerations when planning a mobile initiative, such as .

•the difference between mobile-optimized websites and native mobile applications,

•the challenges of testing and evaluating mobile applications, and

•the importance of adapting mobile technologies to suit local needs.

The presentation will conclude with some thoughts about potential future uses of mobile technology in libraries, including staff-facing applications.

The year 2010 is already acclaimed "year of eReader". The second generation of eReaders is on the market. Amazon launched its Kindle and this was followed by new models and an increasing number of eReaders basing on the eInk-Technology. Book stores and libraries are afflicted by the new business models. Also, user behavior is changing if books are bought and read in digital format on mobile devices. Mobile devices can be eReaders, netbooks, mobile phones, and tablets.

What do these developments mean for the usage of eBooks by students and researchers in universities? What is the role of libraries in this new game? What kind of services can they offer for the new way of reading and learning? Should libraries lend or rent mobile devices with loaded content or should they electronically lend eBooks? Do they have to accept restrictions in usage (DRM)? What's the difference between the different formats and which are the consequences for the users? Which possibilities have academic libraries compared to public libraries? Do we need new models for licensing e-content from the publishers? .

In this presentation, different technologies, digital eBook formats and business models are presented and discussed. The possible impact of eReaders on libraries and their services is a crucial issue for university libraries and a second focus of the presentation. How can we integrate the new technologies in our product portfolio? And which new technologies are already appearing on the horizon?

Mendeley (Lite) for iPhone also syncs shared collections. Shared collections take the pain out of creating a bibliography with collaborators. As soon as you sync your iPhone collection you will see any new documents that your collaborators have added to your shared collections!

To use the Mendeley (Lite) for iPhone you need to have an account with Mendeley Web (mendeley.com), and you need to add to your library either through Mendeley Web or via Mendeley Desktop.

To start using Mendeley (Lite) for iPhone, once you load the app you can login with your Mendeley account details. You can sync your library at any time by activating the sync button on the bottom left hand side of the app.

IN the middle of a cool, cloudless Parisian afternoon, light was pouring into my guest room from a turn-of-the-century courtyard in the 10th Arrondissement. I clambered up to the loft bed, suspended above dark oak floors, and stared at the textiles shop sign swinging in the courtyard through the large, almost floor-to-ceiling windows.

A bottle of Bordeaux was breathing; other amenities included a pantry stocked with cereal, milk and yogurt. I also had a phone number to call if I needed dinner recommendations or, perhaps, extra shower gel. But I was happy sitting at the window, nodding at my new neighbors as they wheeled their bikes onto the street and headed into the cafe-lined Marais.

Hotel guests pay handsomely for such perks, but I wasn’t in a hotel. Nor was I in some vacation rental. I was in the home of Julien Szeps, a 26-year-old chef whom I met through a new kind of short-term rental service called AirBnB.com . And the studio apartment was only 65 euros a night, about $80 at $1.23 to the euro. Not bad for an entire apartment with a full kitchen and bathroom, less than 10 minutes by foot from the Louvre.

While AirBnB is the largest of these new services, it isn’t the only one. A half-dozen upstarts have emerged in the last two years — with names like iStopOver.com and Crashpadder.com — offering the convenience of a hotel, the comforts of a home and the price tag of an up-market hostel. Call them social B&B networks, or maybe peer-to-peer hotels. Despite the confusing legal issues in many cities surrounding subletting, these new short-term rentals are making inroads into the hospitality industry, with hundreds of thousands of listings across the globe; there are over 3,500 short-term rentals in New York State alone.

Social networking first significantly influenced the world of travel in 1999 with the start of Couchsurfing, a service in which members offer a spare couch — or bed, or floor space — to fellow Couchsurfers, at no charge. It spawned a social phenomenon, and today counts almost two million people in 238 countries as members.

Social B&B networks are a natural next step, imposing an important distinction: money.The new sites appeal to a traveler’s desire to see a city through local eyes (and from the vantage point of a resident’s home), but add a hedge against disaster: with Couchsurfing you get what’s given (it’s free, after all), while sites like AirBnB generally provide detailed descriptions of the private rooms or apartments available for rent, along with protections if things go wrong.

Not everyone is happy with these new social B&Bs. Innkeepers, for one, point out that they are unlicensed, uninsured and, depending on local real estate laws, against the law. In Paris, for example, renting a residential apartment for less than a year is considered illegal, though many pied-à-terre owners do it anyway. And in New York City, tenants and co-op owners are not usually allowed to sublet their apartments for short stays without permission from the landlord or co-op board. Still, neither apartment owners who stand to make money from these sites, nor the growing numbers of travelers looking for a middle ground between Couchsurfing and a traditional B&B or hotel are likely to be deterred.

I was looking for an apartment I found through iStopOver, a year-old site based in Toronto that specializes in providing housing during large events like the World Cup and the Olympics, when visitor demand outstrips the supply of traditional hotels and B&Bs. The “Barcelona Penthouse” looked a little less homey, and more like a traditional vacation rental, than other listings, but I drooled over its outdoor terrace.

Then she downloaded "The Elements: A Visual Exploration" to her iPad. Instead of making her drowsy, it blossomed in her hands. The 118 chemical elements, from hydrogen to ununoctium, came alive in vivid images that could be rotated with a swipe of the finger.

More than 550 years after Johannes Gutenberg printed 180 copies of the Bible on paper and vellum, new technologies as revolutionary as the printing press are changing the concept of a book and what it means to be literate. Sound, animation and the ability to connect to the Internet have created the notion of a living book that can establish an entirely new kind of relationship with readers.

As electronic reading devices evolve and proliferate, books are increasingly able to talk to readers, quiz them on their grasp of the material, play videos to illustrate a point or connect them with a community of fellow readers. "They're extending the world by creating new characters," Westerfeld said. "That's what good readers do. They take apart the narrative engine and, examining the different parts, they ask how things could have been different." "Reading well is like playing the piano or the violin," said the poet and critic Dana Gioia, former chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. "It is a high-level cognitive ability that requires long-term practice. I worry that those mechanisms in our culture that used to take a child and have him or her learn more words and more complex syntax are breaking down."

On the other hand, online readers often demonstrate what Small calls "continuous partial attention" as they click from one link to the next. "My response is that the tech train is out of the station, and it's impossible to stop."

Conclusion

In the near future, mobile versions of a library's web site will be as common and as expected as the library's current desktop site is today. Developing your library's mobile web site should start by crafting a successful proposal that effectively communicates the importance of mobile web accessibility to administrators, faculty, and staff within your library. "Ubiquitous handheld access is more prominent thanks to digital lifestyle devices such as smart phones and iPods, yet libraries still focus on digital content for typical desktop PCs" (McDonald and Thomas, 2006, p. 5).

Gathering the data that backs up the growing assumption that mobile phones are omnipresent in your community or on your campus will help build a more convincing argument. Exploring examples of mobile library sites will provide timely ideas and inspiration for your library mobile site. In addition, understanding your particular user base and how they make use of mobile devices, whether they are primarily members of Generation Y or members of another demographic, will help design a site that is heavily trafficked by your users. There will be many opportunities for offering library services in a mobile environment in the near future. Making a strong argument for which of these services works best for your library will keep your library relevant and meaningful in a time ofconstant technological change.

It has been hard to get most professors excited about e-textbooks, but publishers continue to try new ways to sell them on the format. The latest strategy seems to make the e-textbooks even easier for professors to use, by integrating them more tightly into the course-management systems they are already familiar with.

Today Blackboard announced deals with a major textbook publisher— McGraw Hill—and two college bookstore chains—Barnes & Noble College Booksellers and Follett Higher Education Group—to sell textbooks through the tech company's course-management system and to tie online assignments from the e-texts directly into existing online gradebooks.

And earlier this week, CourseSmart, which distributes electronic editions of books by major textbook publishers, announced a new feature that better links its e-textbooks with the leading course-management systems.

Duke U Trying Out iPads for Field Research

Duke University's Marc Sperber is researching which iPad apps and accessories will best work for field-based research.

Starting this fall a class at Duke University in Durham, NC will begin experimenting with the use of Apple iPads in student field research. The Duke Global Health Institute will distribute the tablet devices in a master's course that introduces students to methodological techniques used in global health research. [snip]

"Our primary goal is to equip our students with a toolset that allows them to make the most of their time in the field," said Associate Professor of Sociology Jen'nan Read, who will be teaching the class. "As calculation, graphing, and presentation-creation functions of the iPad are put to use in the field, [snip]."

The Institute expects the iPads to increase research efficiency in the field by allowing students in low-resource settings to capture more data using one device than the traditional methods of data collection.

"Traditionally, the more sophisticated learning, the kind that requires synthesis and evaluation, occurs after the students have left the field, after they have completed data entry, and only after they have begun to organize, interpret, compare and contrast, and summarize their data by retiring to a location with a laptop or desktop computer, ...," said educational technologies consultant Marc Sperber, who is the main consultant for this project. "With an iPad a student may collect, organize and display data while in the field, allowing them to immediately engage in analyzing and interpreting that data when and where it has greatest meaning."

Although Sperber hasn't selected the specific applications he expects to load onto the iPads, he said they would be in the categories of research, reference, communication, and navigation.

After having used an iPad shortly since its release I can safely say that the device — or another one like it — deserves to become an important part of the academic’s arsenal of gadgets. [snip]

At base the iPad is an anything box that replaces a seemingly endless plethora of other things you already own: It's a TV, a radio, an MP3 player, a compass, a flashlight, a level, a deck of cards, a calculator, a photo album, an alarm clock, a Bible, the Talmud (yes, the Talmud has been ported to the iPad)... the list goes on and on.

The crucial question for academics is: What in our current arsenal will the iPad replace? After using the device, the answer surprised me: the iPad makes a lousy computer replacement, but it does a great job of replacing paper.

Apple deserves credit for making the thing as usable as it is, but it is still not quite there. You can browse on it, but you can’t quickly and effectively search databases. You can read e-mail messages, but it takes a tad too long to write them. The screen is much more generously sized than a cell phone… but such a comparison simply damns the iPad with faint praise. Over time the iPad may get more usable as the software improves, but its size will not. And so until the human visual field shrinks and our fingers no longer require tactile feedback, we academics will be sticking to our keyboards and screens.

Where the iPad does shine is as a paper replacement. The iPad is the long, long awaited portable PDF reader that we have hoped for. Finally, we have a device that preserves formatting and displays images, charts, and diagrams. After decades of squinting at minuscule columns of photocopied type we can now zoom in on the articles we are reading and perfectly adjust the text to the width of the screen. You can even highlight and annotate documents and then send the annotations back as notes to your computer.

True, some people do not prefer a backlit screen, but it’s great for reading at night, and despite some early evidence to the contrary, LED screens don’t cause eyestrain any more than eInk. The device is slightly heavier than the Kindle and Nook, but it is still ultra, ultra portable and ultra usable. It makes you read more and saves paper — which is clearly a good thing. [snip]

The reason the iPad is such a great paper replacement is Apple’s app store. Devices like the Kindle sell you content from a single source and allow you to read it in a single way. The iPad, on the other hand, allows third-party developers to create (and sell) different "apps," or programs, that live on your iPad. [snip]

Now, it is currently early days for the iPad and the software is still developing: I have to get my PDFs onto my iPad with one program, and open and read them with another. But clearly things will improve. The makers of the überbibliography program Sente are already working on an iPad app, and soon they and others will make the device even more useful. [snip]

That said, the revolutionary thing about the iPad is not software for reading content, but for finding (and buying) it. The iPad represents the genuine retailization of academic content. Let me explain:

Currently folks like Elsevier act as content wholesalers, selling greats bucketfuls of the stuff to libraries, who then make it available to students and professors. [snip]. Individual articles are prohibitively expensive, and academics must fight through a tangled, messy mass of proxy sign-ins and authentication web pages while their IT guys make embarrassing, eye-averting administrative decisions to not think too much about the copyright of what is being posted on class Web sites.

[snip] ...What would happen if journals went straight to consumers and sold articles like they were mp3s? What if you could log on to your ScienceDirect or JSTOR app and get a complete browsable list of your favorite journal articles, available for purchase for, say, 25 cents each?

Academics are ready for this development. We’ve spent years suffering from Amazon’s fiendish "get drunk and use our one-click purchase feature" to buy books online, and we often download tons of PDFs to make us feel productive. Apps with alerting and micropayment systems could provide for massive distribution that would push new issues of journal to your digital reading device. As such they offer a world where everyone can read exactly the articles they want. Individuals, not institutions, could purchase content — exactly the content they’re like, regardless of whether their library subscribes to it or not. [snip]

There are plenty of outlandish scenarios to imagine: professors who create specialized current content lists or anthologies of classic or cutting-edge articles, essentially filtering wholesale content and retailing it to increase their academic prestige [snip]. Classrooms where student readers are easy to assemble and cheap — something textbook companies have tried unsuccessfully to do for some time. [snip]

A key feature of the retailization of scholarly content is that it be reasonably free of digital rights management -- and here academic publishing should learn from the music industry’s failed attempts to sell copy-protected music. [snip]

As an anything box, the iPad has the potential to replace a whole variety of devices that we use in our research, from voice recorders to GPS units to tuning forks. [snip]

I'm sure there are certain cases where an iPad might make a great mobile device: photographers who want to view, edit, and upload their photos on the fly, for instance. Overall, however, by splitting the difference between dedicated devices and genuine computers, the iPad doesn’t show a lot of promise as a mobile platform for research and teaching. [snip]

Finally, I’ve been talking about how the iPad helps academics do academe better — but does it offer the ability to do academics differently? Is this device truly "magical" in a way that will radically innovate academe?

While I can imagine some innovative pedagogic uses of the device, what academics do is still narrowly defined — and tied to institutional, political, and economic imperatives. Some imagined the Internet would cause us to rethink what it meant for a text to be coherent — and it has, to a certain extent.[snip]

At heart, an anything box like the iPad might not be such a dramatic agent for change anyway. The iPad is a chameleon, able to assume the form of other things but lacking (so far) its own unique identity. You can introduce Twitter into the classroom, but Twitter is the innovative factor here, not the iPad. It may be that someone will write the killer app for the iPad that will mutate our activities in unimaginable ways. But for now those ways remain…. unimaginable.

Indeed, it may be that the iPad is just the harbinger of some future tablet device that is yet to come. That future device might not be from Apple, but it will owe a lot to the iPad. Ultimately, academics need a world full of devices they can pour information in and out of. The more open and interoperable our new ecology of applications, devices, and content providers are, the more our learning will enrich human life — [snip].

Mobile Access 2010: Pew Internet & American Life Report

Cell phone and wireless laptop internet use have each grown more prevalent over the last year. Nearly half of all adults (47%) go online with a laptop using a Wi-Fi connection or mobile broadband card (up from the 39% who did so as of April 2009) while 40% of adults use the internet, email or instant messaging on a mobile phone (up from the 32% of Americans who did this in 2009). This means that 59% of adults now access the internet wirelessly using a laptop or cell phone—that is, they answered “yes” to at least one of these wireless access pathways. That adds up to an increase from the 51% who used a laptop or cell phone wirelessly in April 2009.

The use of non-voice data applications on cell phones has grown dramatically over the last year. Compared with a similar point in 2009, cell phone owners are now more likely to use their mobile phones to:

Take pictures—76% now do this, up from 66% in April 2009
Send or receive text messages—72% vs. 65%
Access the internet—38% vs. 25%
Play games—34% vs. 27%
Send or receive email—34% vs. 25%
Record a video—34% vs. 19%
Play music—33% vs. 21%
Send or receive instant messages—30% vs. 20%

African-Americans and English-speaking Latinos continue to be among the most active users of the mobile web. Cell phone ownership is higher among African-Americans and Latinos than among whites (87% vs. 80%) and minority cell phone owners take advantage of a much greater range of their phones’ features compared with white mobile phone users. In total, 64% of African-Americans access the internet from a laptop or mobile phone, a seven-point increase from the 57% who did so at a similar point in 2009.

Young adults (those ages 18-29) are also avid users of mobile data applications, but older adults are gaining fast. Compared with 2009, cell phone owners ages 30-49 are significantly more likely to use their mobile device to send text messages, access the internet, take pictures, record videos, use email or instant messaging, and play music.

About the Survey

This report is based on the findings of a daily tracking survey on Americans’ use of the Internet. The results in this report are based on data from telephone interviews conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates International between April 29 and May 30, 2010, among a sample of 2,252 adults, age 18 and older. Interviews were conducted in English. For results based on the total sample, one can say with 95% confidence that the error attributable to sampling and other random effects is plus or minus 2.4 percentage points. For results based Internet users (n=1,756), the margin of sampling error is plus or minus 2.7 percentage points. In addition to sampling error, question wording and practical difficulties in conducting telephone surveys may introduce some error or bias into the findings of opinion polls.

The convergence of web-enabled smartphones, the applications designed for smartphone interfaces, and cloud computing is rapidly changing how people interact with each other and with their environments. The commercial sector has taken the lead in creating mobile websites that leverage the capacities of smartphones, and the academic community has begun to follow suit. MIT and Stanford University launched mobile websites in June and October, 2008, respectively,1 with many more university mobile websites launched throughout 2009.2 Given this relatively recent adoption of mobile technology by the academic community, the handful of studies completed examine how people use academic mobile websites or identify what information/services they want to access via the mobile web and tend to focus on one or two institutions rather than a cross-section of mobile websites across multiple institutions. Cross-sectional studies identify the types of services commonly offered while allowing for comparisons between what is offered and what users want or need to access using the mobile web.

The study reported in this article examines the mobile websites of large research universities and their libraries in the United States and Canada. The services available on different university and library mobile websites are compared and contrasted with the literature identifying what mobile web users desire. This analysis across multiple mobile websites provides universities and their libraries with an initial benchmark for comparisons with other institutions. Future research on the mobile web can identify trends and design issues that are currently only objects of speculation.

Brief History of the World eBook Fair:

Just a few years ago the First World eBook Fairs came on the scene with about 1/3 million books and doubled to 2/3 million in 2008, and over a million and a quarter the following year.

This year there are over Three million eBooks.

The World eBook Fair's mammoth amount of books were created by contributions from 100+ eLibraries and thousands of volunteers from around the world.

This year we have added over a million new free eBooks already, and plan to add 50,000 more by the end of The world eBook Fair, which runs from July 4 to August 4.

The collections include light and heavy reading materials, more reference books, scientific items, etc., and about 50,000 music entries in addition to the 12,000 that debuted last year.

E Is for Explosion: E-Readers, Etextbooks, Econtent, Elearning, E-Everything

Social media and learning technology have been hot for some time now, but with the sudden proliferation of ebooks, e-readers, etextbooks, and interactive digital content, technology in education is approaching its flash point.

In case you weren’t feeling it, welcome to the revolution! By the end of 2010, Gen Y members will outnumber Baby Boomers, and 96% of this new generation has already joined a social network, according to author and social media pundit Erik Qualman. Radio took 38 years to reach 50 million users, television took 13 years, the internet just 4 years, the iPod only 3—and what about Facebook? The king of social media added 100 million users in less than 9 months.

At the same time, a 2009 U.S. Department of Education study showed online students outperforming their face-to-face counterparts, while 1 in 6 higher education students enrolled in online courses. Also, according to the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project, 57% of experts agree with the prediction that, enabled by information technologies, the pace of learning in the next decade will increasingly be set by student choices. In 10 years, most students will spend at least part of their “school days” in virtual classes, grouped online with others who share their interests, mastery, and skills.

And how does the rock star of gadgets, the iPad, change things? The iPad fallout is just now arriving in classrooms near you. For starters, there’s an app that makes chemistry more student-accessible in 2 minutes than a century of instruction has ever done (see The Elements). And all those publishers aforementioned? They have big plans for the iPad. More on that soon.

Technological (bandwidth, devices), cultural (tech-native students), and economic factors (desperate schools and desperately innovative companies) have converged to yield the current scene. From New York-based startup ScrollMotion (http://www.scrollmotion.com/), there’s more interactivity to come. Most of the major players in the educational publishing arena ... have not missed the fact that last year, this young company proved it knows how to work an iPhone app. That’s why it’s jumping on the iPad wagon this year, inking deals to create interactive texts that will do the following:

• Play embedded videos
• Record lectures linked to chapters
• Offer digitally interactive self-assessment tests
• Provide annotation capabilities and live glossaries highlighting words of interest
• Pose interactive charts, graphs, equations, and sentences for study and engagement

This all will basically stretch the boundaries of what we now call “reading a book” into something more like what we might soon describe as “an interactive, touchscreen viewing experience.”

Skiff Magic

Do you ever wonder about that tech magic you saw in some of the Harry Potter movies? For example, the map with real-time footprints? The book that writes itself? How about the electronic newspapers with their ever-moving photos and headlines? Imaginative, yes. Fiction, not quite. Have a look at Palo Alto, Calif.-based Skiff ( http://www.skiff.com/), an e-reading, advertising, and digital media company that produces the Skiff Reader, an oversized yet sleek e-paper, nonglass, touchscreen display unit with four times as many pixels as most e-readers. The Newseum is hosting a mobile vendors’ fair from 12-5pm on Wed, 4 August 2010. We’d like your recommendations of vendors with interesting museum projects who should be invited to exhibit. Each vendor will be given one, 8ft table to demonstrate on, with power and Internet access (see attached photo) in the entrance hall/atrium area of the Newseum. Modest sized table-top displays are permitted, but not large booths or displays that exceed the immediate space of the table top.

Space and time are limited, so not all recommended companies will be invited, but we will compile a list of recommendations received for future reference by all. We are also entertaining the possibility of a ‘Demo Table’ in the fair where museum mobile projects can be represented even if the vendor or museum cannot be present to demo them in person.

In conjunction with the fair, local area museums are invited to meet from 2-4pm at the Newseum to discuss possible collaborations on DC Metro area-wide mobile projects.

Abstract

Though true location aware devices such as GPS enabled phones are becoming more common (e.g., the latest iPhone includes GPS and compass) developing services that “augment” reality is unrealistic for most libraries due to time; money and technical constraints.

There is an easier option though – using small printed codes, such as QR codes, around the library that link to resources and information appropriate to their location. QR (Quick Response) codes are a matrix codes, like a two dimensional bar code. They can be read by mobile phones with integrated cameras, with a small application installed. Some mobiles come with the application ready installed, though it can also be download for free from the internet and installed on PDAs, smartphones and other mobile devices. At the University of Huddersfield we have used QR codes to deliver context appropriate help and information to blur the boundaries between the physical and electronic world. We’ve developed mobile friendly materials to deliver information skills materials directly to our users at the point of need, linked by QR codes on printed materials and on appropriate locations in the physical library. This article outlines the practical uses we’ve found for QR codes and gives preliminary results of how they’ve been received by our library users.
